Social Commentary + Theme

Social Commentary + Theme is a 4-week advanced class where we'll dig deeper into two of the elements of the Deconstruction: commentary and theme. In particular, we'll analyze the beliefs, wants, and behaviors of characters and then explore what they may have to say about society at large.

As players recognize themes in their work, they can develop them over the course of a long form set. In the end, the goal is to create a performance that feels connected and has a particular point of view.

Class Dates: April 28, May 5, 12, and 19 from 1-3:30 pm.

Instructor: Tony DeRosa

The Ladder with Brian James O'Connell

3 worlds. 12 characters. 21 scenes. This is The Ladder.

Improvisers must learn to be efficient with their use of character and relationship to tell a story. Whether in use as a class/rehearsal exercise, an improvised show format or structure for a scripted one act play, The Ladder is a wonderful tool to hone an improviser’s focus to a razor sharp edge on what are the most important parts of a staged theatrical piece: character, relationship & story.

No matter what form your team is doing, it is important that you learn the basics of being able to appear to be performing a piece on purpose.

Deconstruction with Brian James O'Connell

Created by The Family, and under the direction of Del Close himself, The Deconstruction is the single most important long form ever created as it contains every single possible permutation of scene approach and thematic development.

An understanding of The Deconstruction is essential for the artistic, intellectual and technical development of an improviser. Quite simply, an improviser’s understanding of the “work” will never be the same after being exposed to “Decon”; whether you perform short form, improvised Shakespeare or are merely a writer looking to improve your understanding of character and structure, learning these skills will radically improve your understanding of improvisation and raise your level of play.
